Context
On Sunday, August 9, 2015, Golden Gate Park reaches the last day of Outside Lands. Elton John closes the festival with the All the Hits Tour. Beside him are Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson, partners from the 1970s, along with Matt Bissonette, John Mahon and Kim Bullard.
The Bitch Is Back paves the way for Bennie and the Jets and Candle in the Wind. The crowd recognizes the intros and sings along. Rocket Man gets a solo piano prelude; further on, Your Song and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me share space with the rock drive of the final stretch.
The recording stays tied to the festival's memory. In 2020, when the pandemic halts gatherings in the park, excerpts from this performance return in Inside Lands, a virtual program combining archive footage and new performances. The 2015 night takes on another meaning: that of a crowd gathered before social distancing.
- Rocket Man opens with a solo piano prelude.
