Context
In November 2006, Basel slots in between the Canadian shows and the trip to Oceania on Elton John's schedule. There are two performances at AVO Session, as part of The Captain and the Kid tour. The record picks up the story that he and Bernie Taupin began telling on Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.
At the Festsaal Messe, Elton sings at the piano with Davey Johnstone, Guy Babylon, Bob Birch, Nigel Olsson and John Mahon. Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding opens the journey. Further on, five new songs come in a row, from Postcards from Richard Nixon to the title track, before the return to the hits and the encore of Your Song.
After Basel, the band moves on to Australia and New Zealand, and the tour continues until January 2008. The Swiss recording has a different reach: the live broadcast across Europe marks an international turning point for the festival. Television carries that visit to the Basel hall beyond Switzerland's borders.
- Five tracks from The Captain and the Kid form an unbroken block at the center of the show.
