Context
In 1972, Johnny Cash's country takes over a German program associated with rock. Beat-Club welcomes the singer in Bremen for an edition devoted to his music, aired on September 30. His American show had ended the year before; here, television once again gathers road partners and family.
Carl Perkins clears the way with Blue Suede Shoes and Me and Jesus. Cash takes the vocals on A Boy Named Sue and moves through prison stories like San Quentin and Folsom Prison Blues. Anita Carter sings Lovin' Him Was Easier, with a false start preserved. June comes in for five duets, from Jackson to If I Had a Hammer.
A Thing Called Love, the title track of the record released that year, closes the session. A few months later, Beat-Club ends its run and Radio Bremen launches Musikladen. The recording stays tied to that chapter of German television: a Cash performance that keeps not only the songs but also the attempts and interruptions.
- June Carter Cash shares five songs with Cash, including Jackson and The Loving Gift.
