Context
It is noon on September 14, 1971, and Johnny Cash's appointment is with Danish television cameras. At the TV-Byen studio in Gladsaxe, he gathers the Tennessee Three and his road companions. Man in Black had reached stores months earlier; now the song takes its place among earlier hits.
Cash opens with A Boy Named Sue and shares the spotlight with other leads. Carl Perkins takes Blue Suede Shoes and Matchbox; the Statler Brothers sing Bed of Roses and Flowers on the Wall. June Carter Cash comes in for three duets, including If I Were a Carpenter. The final stretch brings in the Carter family and flows into collective gospel singing.
There is still another stage that day: KB Hallen in Copenhagen hosts the evening show. The television session takes a different path and reaches DVD in 2006. In 2015, the audio gets its own release on record. The recording preserves more than a Cash recital: it keeps together the artists who gave shape to his traveling show.
- June Carter Cash shares three duets with Cash, including If I Were a Carpenter.
- Children, Go Where I Send Thee brings together Cash, Carl Perkins, the Carter Family and the Statler Brothers.
