Context
On April 4, 2005, Bruce Springsteen takes the Two River Theater in Red Bank without the E Street Band. Devils & Dust has not yet reached stores. The Storytellers taping brings two new songs close to a catalog he now opens to discussion, not just to performance.
Springsteen alternates acoustic guitar, piano and harmonica, sings and interrupts the flow to examine characters, images and writing choices. Patti Scialfa adds her voice to Brilliant Disguise. Blinded by the Light and Nebraska share space with The Rising; Thunder Road gets a piano version. The explanations are part of the night's structure.
The program airs on television on April 23, a few days before the release of Devils & Dust. In September, it gets an expanded DVD release, with the eight songs and questions from the audience. The recording preserves both the performances and the work of taking the songs apart: the songwriter puts his own writing under examination.
- Patti Scialfa joins Springsteen on Brilliant Disguise.
- Thunder Road closes the musical sequence in a piano version.
