Context
In May 2005, G3 comes to Japan for the first time. Joe Satriani and Steve Vai share the trip with John Petrucci, who had already been part of the tour in 2001. At the Tokyo International Forum on May 8, the meeting gets the recording that becomes Live in Tokyo.
Petrucci opens the release with Glasgow Kiss and Damage Control, backed by Dave LaRue and Mike Portnoy. Vai comes in with a quintet that includes Billy Sheehan and Tony MacAlpine. Satriani plays Up in Flames, Searching and War before bringing the three guitarists together for Foxy Lady, La Grange and Smoke on the Water.
The night reaches DVD and double CD in October of that year, on Epic. The release selects from the individual sets, rather than reproducing each performance in full, and keeps the sequence of covers at the close. The recording captures the project's Japanese stop without erasing its structure: three separate spaces, then the shared stage.
