“To see May, Taylor and Rodgers together on the night that produced the partnership's first DVD.”
Context
In May 2005, the Queen name returns to the road with an explicit addition: Paul Rodgers shares the project with Brian May and Roger Taylor. The partnership reaches the Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield on the 9th, during this lineup's first world tour. John Deacon stays out of the group.
On stage, Rodgers takes lead vocals, but he does not hold the center of the show alone. May sings Love of My Life and opens Hammer to Fall at a slow tempo. Taylor leads These Are the Days of Our Lives and shares Radio Ga Ga with Rodgers. Jamie Moses, Danny Miranda and Spike Edney complete the lineup.
The night gets a second life as Return of the Champions, released on double CD and DVD later in 2005. David Mallet directs the film, which makes Sheffield the audiovisual document of this early partnership. The film preserves a concrete choice: keeping May and Taylor singing, while Rodgers takes on part of the repertoire associated with Mercury.
- Brian May sings Love of My Life for Freddie Mercury's mother, who is in the audience.
