Context
Seven years of scattered sessions lead to a short stretch on the road. In June 2006, Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris arrive at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City with All the Roadrunning freshly released. The house is sold out. The studio partnership now shares the stage, near the end of the joint tour.
Right Now opens the performance, and Red Staggerwing keeps the focus on the duo's work. Harris brings Red Dirt Girl and Boulder to Birmingham; Knopfler revisits Dire Straits' Romeo and Juliet and So Far Away. Around them, six musicians complete the lineup, with keyboards, guitars, fiddle, mandolin, bass and drums.
The tour ends two days later in Berkeley. In November, the Gibson night is released on CD and DVD, directed by Martyn Atkins with music production by Guy Fletcher. The film preserves seventeen songs: not just the move of an album to the stage, but the meeting of two catalogs.
- Red Dirt Girl and Boulder to Birmingham share space with Dire Straits songs.
