Context
On May 19, 2016, the opening of Rock in Rio Lisboa meets a tour in transformation. In the United States, Springsteen had played The River in full. At Parque da Bela Vista, the album takes up only three slots: the celebration of its 35th anniversary makes way for a broader journey through his career.
In a black shirt with a guitar in hand, Springsteen comes in with Badlands and keeps the band moving. Darkness on the Edge of Town is among the five tour debuts that night. On Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, images of Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici bring the late bandmates to the center of the performance.
After Twist and Shout, Springsteen returns alone for This Hard Land, with acoustic guitar and harmonica. The road moves on to Madrid, while Lisbon also gets an official audio release through Nugs. The broadcast preserves another dimension of the night: the shift from an album retrospective to a festival show.
- This Hard Land closes the night with Springsteen alone, on acoustic guitar and harmonica.
