Context
Eight months after Katrina, New Orleans is still living with the destruction when Jazz Fest returns to the Fair Grounds. On April 30, 2006, Springsteen arrives with the Sessions Band and a newly released album. It is not an E Street Band reunion: it is twenty musicians in front of a festival crowd.
Fiddles, banjo, horns and voices share the stage on O Mary Don't You Weep, John Henry and Pay Me My Money Down. Springsteen also brings Johnny 99 and Open All Night. Introducing How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?, he describes his visit to the devastated neighborhoods and denounces the government's response to the disaster.
My City of Ruins opens the encore and finds another home in the wounded city. When the Saints Go Marching In closes the performance before the tour moves on to Europe. The recording gets an official audio release in 2017 and reaches the public in full as a film in 2019, preserving this meeting between musical renewal and rebuilding.
- My City of Ruins opens the encore before a city still marked by destruction.
