Context
Ten years after the previous edition, Rock in Rio returns to Jacarepaguá. On January 13, 2001, R.E.M. plays its first show in Brazil and closes the festival's second night, after Foo Fighters. Reveal is still in final mixing, but two new songs already reach the stage.
Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills share the performance with Scott McCaughey, Ken Stringfellow and Joey Waronker. Finest Worksong opens a run that crosses different decades of the band. She Just Wants to Be and The Lifting debut among familiar songs; in the encore, Everybody Hurts, Pop Song 89 and It's the End of the World as We Know It close the set.
In the following days, the two new songs are already circulating online in recordings of the performance. In May, they find a place on Reveal. The festival's TV coverage preserves this meeting between the Brazilian debut and an album yet to come: the recording keeps the moment when unreleased songs share space with an established repertoire.
- She Just Wants to Be and The Lifting are played live for the first time.
