The group formed in Dallas, Texas, in 1989, as Dixie Chicks, with a bluegrass-rooted sound. The arrival of singer Natalie Maines preceded the success of Wide Open Spaces (1998) and Fly (1999). After criticizing the Iraq War in 2003, it faced a boycott and answered with Taking the Long Way (2006). After a hiatus, it returned with Gaslighter (2020) and adopted the name The Chicks.
