Context
Nine years after headlining Reading in 2002, The Strokes return to the top of the festival on August 27, 2011. They share the slot with Pulp, who play before them. Angles had ended a gap of more than five years between records, but the reunion also looks back to the beginning.
Julian Casablancas opens with Is This It, joined by Nick Valensi, Albert Hammond Jr., Nikolai Fraiture and Fabrizio Moretti. Under Cover of Darkness and Machu Picchu place the new record among songs from the early years. Jarvis Cocker returns to the stage to share the vocals on The Cars' Just What I Needed.
After the guest spot, Juicebox leads the final run up to Take It or Leave It. The next day, both bands head to Leeds and reverse the order: Pulp close the night, without repeating the meeting. Reading's TV coverage preserves a collaboration that belongs specifically to that Saturday, between two generations of rock.
