Context
By May 2010, Lungs had already hit number one in the UK and won the Brit for best album. Florence + the Machine arrives at Pinkpop's Sunday with that momentum. In Landgraaf, the address is the Converse Stage, a tent where the scale still lets you follow every move Florence Welch makes.
Barefoot and in a blue dress, Welch crosses the stage while the band, including Tom Monger's harp, keeps its distance. The movement costs her some vocal control, but it also gets the tent going. You've Got the Love opens the final stretch; Dog Days Are Over gets the crowd dancing, before Kiss With a Fist and Rabbit Heart.
The set sits between the consolidation of the debut and the second record, Ceremonials, which arrives in October 2011. The recording preserves that passage without needing an arena stage: a singer in constant motion, a band with harp and guitar, and the songs that turn the first phase into international reach.
- Kiss With a Fist pushes the final stretch toward hard rock.
