Why watch

“To see The Strokes launch MTV's $2 Bill series a few months after Is This It.”

Context

Two dollars buy a ticket to see a band that has just taken Is This It to radio and television. On February 2, 2002, The Strokes arrive at Hollywood Center Studios, in Los Angeles, to launch MTV's $2 Bill. Recent success meets a small stage, surrounded by the audience.

Julian Casablancas sings between the guitars of Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi, while Nikolai Fraiture and Fabrizio Moretti keep the pulse. Barely Legal and Soma concentrate the friction of the strings. The session also exposes the work of television: songs return in new takes, and two compositions preview the next record.

Meet Me in the Bathroom and Between Love & Hate land on the album Room on Fire in 2003. The recording goes separate ways: television airs a selection, and the DVD The Videos And More includes performances of New York City Cops and The Modern Age. The extra takes preserve a session larger than the broadcast program.
