“To see The Strokes at Bonnaroo's tenth edition, during their recording comeback with Angles.”
Context
Heat and dust hang over Bonnaroo's last day, on June 12, 2011. The Strokes arrive at the festival's tenth edition with Angles still fresh, after more than five years without a new album. In Manchester, Tennessee, the comeback meets a crowd already worn by three days of shows.
Julian Casablancas walks on in a leather jacket despite the temperature, and the quintet opens with Is This It. Under Cover of Darkness and Taken for a Fool place the new record among songs from the three before it. Of the sixteen tracks, six come from the debut; Take It or Leave It closes the performance at sunset.
The Tennessee stop is part of the Angles Tour, which moves on to European festivals in the following weeks. The Vevo stream carries the show beyond the field, and the full performance is already circulating online that month. The recording keeps this meeting between a return with new material and the lasting weight of the first songs.
- Five songs from Angles share space with six tracks from Is This It.
