“To see Prince bring his band and the Marching 100 to the rainy 2007 Super Bowl halftime.”
Context
On February 4, 2007, rain sweeps through Dolphin Stadium and changes the conditions of the Super Bowl halftime. Prince comes from a residency in Las Vegas, where he prepared the performance. Instead of devoting all twelve minutes to his own hits, he makes room for songs by other artists.
On a stage shaped like his symbol, Prince sings and plays guitar amid the band, dancers Maya and Nandy McClean and the Marching 100. Let's Go Crazy opens the live portion. Baby I'm a Star works in Proud Mary; All Along the Watchtower leads into Best of You. Purple Rain closes the run in the rain.
The broadcast turns the halftime into a performance with a life of its own. The following week, Prince's physical and digital sales rise, and the recording goes on to top various Super Bowl retrospectives. The image that remains does not depend on the score: guitar, enlarged silhouette and water share the same stage.
- Purple Rain closes the performance in the rain, with the guitar's silhouette enlarged on a screen.
