Context
On the last night of 1982, the American conquest is still underway. Rio had already reached number two in the UK, but it needed remixes and a new edition to gain ground in the United States. At the Palladium in New York, Duran Duran takes over MTV's New Year's Eve special.
The band opens with Rio and draws five of the eight songs from the second record. Simon Le Bon takes the vocals, surrounded by Andy Taylor's guitar, John's bass, Roger's drums and Nick Rhodes' keyboards. Planet Earth, Careless Memories and Girls on Film close the sequence, reaching back to the debut album.
In the first months of 1983, Hungry Like the Wolf and Rio climb the American charts, while MTV widens the group's exposure. The performance remains a television record of this moment: the quintet already has British hits but is still making room for itself in the United States. It is the turning point between recognition and expansion.
