Why watch

“To see Sade's Dutch debut, broadcast live just two months after Diamond Life.”

Context

In September 1984, Sade arrive at Ahoy for their first show in the Netherlands. Diamond Life had come out only two months earlier. The band opens Veronica's Rocknight, sharing the bill with Level 42 and Talk Talk, and takes its debut to live television.

Sade Adu starts with Timmy Thomas' Why Can't We Live Together. Your Love Is King and Hang On to Your Love follow. Alongside the core of the band, drums, percussion, trumpet and trombone expand the lineup. Among the songs from the debut, Is It a Crime previews Promise.

The Rotterdam stop helps boost demand for Diamond Life in the country. The following year, Smooth Operator reaches American audiences and Promise follows the debut. The Ahoy recording stays tied to television: forty years later, NPO airs the complete concert again.

Is It a Crime previews the second album, Promise, as early as 1984.
