Context
In December 1980, Dire Straits arrives at Dortmund's Westfalenhalle with two new seats on stage. David Knopfler had left during the Making Movies sessions. Hal Lindes takes over second guitar, and Alan Clark brings keyboards into the lineup presenting the third album on the road.
On December 19, Mark Knopfler opens the performance with Once Upon a Time in the West. John Illsley and Pick Withers hold up the quintet, which moves through Down to the Waterline, Lions and News before Sultans of Swing. Tunnel of Love and Solid Rock put Making Movies at the center of the final stretch.
After Dortmund, the On Location Tour runs until July 1981, also passing through Oceania. The night is preserved by the Rockpop in Concert cameras, in ZDF material. Its destination is television, not a concert film released on DVD: a record of the transition from the original quartet to the lineup with keyboards.
