“To see Tina at the Park West months before Let's Stay Together opened the way to Private Dancer.”
Context
In August 1983, the distance between Chicago's Park West and the big stages Tina Turner will fill is still only a few months. Private Dancer does not yet exist as a released album. Under Roger Davies' guidance, she had already reshaped the show toward rock, leaving part of the old repertoire behind.
On stage, Tina opens with Cat People and goes through The Acid Queen before reaching River Deep, Mountain High. James Ralston is on guitar, Kenny Moore plays piano and Jack Bruno sits at the drums. The Beatles, Rod Stewart and Foreigner share space with Nutbush City Limits and the long stretch of Proud Mary.
The recording reaches television through WTTW's Soundstage, with reruns on American public broadcasting. Later that year, Let's Stay Together opens the way to the new recording phase; in 1984, Private Dancer changes the scale of her career. Chicago preserves the phase just before, when the rebuilding already has a repertoire and a band but not yet its decisive album.
- Cat People opens a selection that brings Bowie, Foreigner and the Beatles into Tina's repertoire.
