“To follow the European close of the Hot Space Tour, as Queen takes its musical shift to Milton Keynes.”
Context
In June 1982, Queen arrives in Milton Keynes with Hot Space just released and a musical direction that brings its rock closer to funk. The show closes the European leg of the tour. Outdoors, the band has to fit that change into a production designed for huge crowds.
Flash plays at the opening and hands the stage to The Hero. The set moves through Action This Day, Staying Power and Back Chat without leaving out Somebody to Love and Bohemian Rhapsody. On Dragon Attack, a broken guitar string opens space for John Deacon to stretch out his bass part.
The concert is filmed, but its first television airings offer shortened versions. The complete edit arrives on DVD and CD in 2004, under the name On Fire: Live at the Bowl. The recording preserves the meeting between the phase of rhythmic experimentation and the repertoire that sustains the scale of Queen's shows.
