Context
Diamond Life is three days away from British stores when Sade take the stage at the Casino de Montreux on July 13, 1984. The first album is still to come, but its nine songs already carry the performance at the Swiss festival. The recording debut meets a whole repertoire already in circulation.
The band opens with Timmy Thomas' Why Can't We Live Together and moves through Your Love Is King before working through the rest of the record's songs. Sade Adu takes the vocals; Stuart Matthewman splits guitar and saxophone. Paul Denman, Andrew Hale, Dave Early and Martin Ditcham complete the instrumental core, with James McMillan on trumpet.
The following Monday, Diamond Life reaches the British market and begins a run that earns the group the BRIT for best album. The performance remains recorded for television, preserving that border between stage and recording debut. Montreux holds the songs before commercial success comes to define the size of the band.
- All nine tracks from the debut record appear in the same performance.
