Context
On October 5, 1998, a newly opened arena welcomes a band in reconstruction. Depeche Mode arrives at the Kölnarena on its first tour after Alan Wilder's departure. Ultra had gone without a tour of its own; now, The Singles 86>98 provides the reason to get back on the road.
Dave Gahan takes the vocals, while Martin Gore splits time between guitar, keyboards and singing. Andy Fletcher completes the core, joined by Peter Gordeno, Christian Eigner and two backing singers. The television selection brings A Question of Time close to It's No Good and makes room for Gore to sing Home.
MTV films the entire performance, but the broadcast condenses the night into about 47 minutes. The edit cuts songs and moves Home, preserving eight songs from the concert. The recording remains a television excerpt of this comeback, not a complete document of the Cologne stop.
- Martin Gore takes lead vocals on Home.
