Context
In May 1997, Nancy Boy had already taken Placebo to number four on the UK charts. The group arrives at Pinkpop with just one album out and a renewed lineup: Steve Hewitt had replaced Robert Schultzberg the year before. In Landgraaf, the debut still carries the festival set.
Brian Molko handles vocals and guitar, Stefan Olsdal plays bass and Hewitt sits behind the drums. Bionic opens a run of nine songs that does not stick to the first record. Brick Shithouse and Allergic preview the next work; Kitsch Object appears between them and Come Home. Bruise Pristine, Teenage Angst and Nancy Boy close the journey.
The following year, Without You I'm Nothing puts two of the songs played here on record and widens the band's international reach. The Pinkpop footage remains a document of this passage: the debut still dominates, but the second album begins to take shape in front of an audience, before reaching stores.
- Brick Shithouse and Allergic preview the second album, released in 1998.
