Context
Three months after the arrival of Secret Samadhi, Live takes one of the main slots on Pinkpop's Monday bill. It is May 19, 1997, in Landgraaf. The quartet comes in with an album that debuted at the top of the American chart, yet still carries the weight of Throwing Copper's success.
Ed Kowalczyk, Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer and Chad Gracey open with Rattlesnake and quickly fit in Selling the Drama and All Over You. The set alternates between the two albums without turning to Mental Jewelry. Eight new tracks share space with seven from the previous record; Waitress is saved for the encore, after White, Discussion.
The performance is part of the festival's national TV coverage and pins down this passage between two of the band's cycles. After the European leg, the tour moves on to American amphitheaters in July, with Turn My Head gaining ground as a single. The recording preserves Secret Samadhi while it is still new, before The Distance to Here opens another chapter in 1999.
- Waitress closes the encore of a show split exclusively between Secret Samadhi and Throwing Copper.
