Context
In May 1997, Mother Mother had already taken Tracy Bonham to number one on the American alternative chart. Two Grammy nominations widened the singer's exposure. It is in this move from discovery to the international circuit that she arrives at Megaland, on Pinkpop's closing Monday.
In a pink wig, Bonham sets the songs from her debut alongside compositions still taking shape. Thumbelina, in its early version Ground, opens the way; Tell It to the Sky and Sharks Can't Sleep hold up the presence of The Burdens of Being Upright. Mother Mother comes near the end, before Bulldog and the closing 50ft. Queenie, by PJ Harvey.
After this season, the follow-up to the debut is slow to arrive: Down Here only comes out in 2000, the year Bonham returns to Pinkpop. The 1997 footage remains in the festival's audiovisual archive. It preserves a specific stage: the first record still holds the attention, while other songs already compete for space on stage.
- PJ Harvey's 50ft. Queenie closes the performance.
