Context
At 11:15 a.m. on a Monday, Nada Surf takes Pinkpop's north stage, in Landgraaf. It is May 19, 1997, less than a year after the debut High/Low. Popular has already opened doors for the trio outside the United States, but the set does not stop at the single.
Matthew Caws handles vocals and guitar, Daniel Lorca plays bass and Ira Elliot holds down the drums. Treehouse opens the run of ten songs, eight of them from the first album. Firecracker and Spooky point toward the next work. Between Popular and the closing Sleep, Stalemate folds in an excerpt of Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart.
The following year, The Proximity Effect reaches Europe, before getting an independent American release in 2000, after the split with Elektra. The Pinkpop footage remains in the Dutch audiovisual archive, cataloged among NTR's productions. The performance preserves this interval: the debut still holds the center, while two songs already announce the next record.
- Firecracker and Spooky preview The Proximity Effect, released the following year.
- Stalemate makes room for an excerpt of Love Will Tear Us Apart.
