Context
On May 19, 1997, The Gathering reaches Megaland, in Landgraaf, with two neighboring phases sharing space. Mandylion had marked Anneke van Giersbergen's arrival and taken the band onto the Dutch charts. Now the Nighttime Birds tour puts the second album with the singer at the center of the performance.
Fear the Sea opens the show, followed by Adrenaline. On Most Surfaces and Confusion introduce the Nighttime Birds material, while Leaves and In Motion #2 keep Mandylion in rotation. Anneke takes the vocals in front of René Rutten and Jelmer Wiersma's guitars, with Frank Boeijen, Hugo Prinsen Geerligs and Hans Rutten completing the six-piece.
Strange Machines closes the performance before another change of direction. In 1998, How to Measure a Planet? moves further toward shoegaze, post-rock and trip-hop, and Wiersma leaves the group. Preserved in the Pinkpop audiovisual archive, the show captures the six-piece lineup between the rise of Mandylion and that widening of horizons.
