Context
Thirteen years separate the last studio album from that Friday, September 22, 2017. At the Parque Olímpico, Tears for Fears makes its Rock in Rio debut ahead of Bon Jovi. Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith arrive with a stable backing band and a set that spans decades without relying on anything new.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World opens the performance, and Orzabal greets Rio in Portuguese. Secret World and Everybody Loves a Happy Ending share space with Mad World and Pale Shelter. Creep brings Radiohead to the center of the show; Head Over Heels joins Broken before the close with Shout.
In the following weeks, the duo presents I Love You but I'm Lost, tied to the compilation Rule the World: The Greatest Hits, and returns to British stages. The Rio night remains documented by Multishow's broadcast: a portrait of the gap between the 2000s reunion album and the return to new material.
- Head Over Heels and Broken form the medley that comes before Shout.
