Context
On June 13, 2015, John Coffey reaches Pinkpop with its third album still recent. The Great News had come out in January and now gives the tour its name. In Landgraaf, the Utrecht five-piece brings its punk rock and post-hardcore to one of the biggest festivals in the Netherlands.
David Achter de Molen shares the performance with guitarists Alfred van Luttikhuizen and Christoffer van Teijlingen, bassist Richard van Luttikhuizen and drummer Carsten Brunsveld. During the break in Dirt & Stones, the singer stands on top of the crowd. A cup flies through the air; he catches the beer and drinks it.
The online stream turns that moment into a story that reaches beyond the festival. The clip circulates as video and GIF, hits the top of Reddit and gets international coverage in the following days. The full recording preserves what the clip leaves out: the performance of a band in the middle of promoting its third album.
- David catches and drinks the beer thrown from the crowd at 33:45.
