“To see generations of folk gathered at the Kennedy Center for the close of Woody Guthrie's centennial celebrations.”
Context
On October 14, 2012, Woody Guthrie's centennial reaches the Kennedy Center in Washington. After tributes in different American states, the event brings together musicians connected to his work. The honoree is absent from the stage, but his words run through generations of performers.
Rosanne Cash sings with John Leventhal; Ani DiFranco shares Deportee with Ry Cooder and Dan Gellert. The Del McCoury Band welcomes Tim O'Brien and Tony Trischka's banjo. Among the familiar songs, Lucinda Williams presents House of Earth, part of the work of setting to music the lyrics preserved in Guthrie's archives.
The event comes out on CD and DVD through Legacy Recordings in June 2013, alongside the premiere of a shorter version on PBS. Directed by Jim Brown, the recording widens the celebration's reach. The close brings the participants together on This Train Is Bound for Glory and This Land Is Your Land: different voices fill the same song.
- Ani DiFranco shares Deportee with Ry Cooder and Dan Gellert.
