Tony Trischka was born in Syracuse, New York, and became interested in the banjo after hearing Kingston Trio recordings. He became a central figure in progressive banjo, both on solo records and in groups, among them Country Cooking.
His albums explore the instrument beyond traditional bluegrass, and he has also worked as a teacher and author of instruction books. In 2023, he released Earl Jam, a project built from recordings by Earl Scruggs.
