“To see Sheeran at Pinkpop on the day Sing becomes his first UK number one.”
Context
On June 8, 2014, Ed Sheeran reaches Pinkpop's main stage with something to celebrate: Sing hits number one in the UK that day. In Landgraaf, the second album has yet to arrive. The show finds the singer between the recognition of + and the expansion of ×.
Alone, Sheeran starts You Need Me, I Don't Need You by building layers of acoustic guitar, beatbox and beats tapped on the body of the instrument. The loop pedal multiplies the work of a single musician. Don't and Thinking Out Loud introduce the next phase; The A Team gathers the crowd singalong before the closing Sing.
Two weeks later, × hits the worldwide market; in August, the tour bearing its name begins. The set is part of that festival edition's television coverage and preserves a precise point in the passage between the two records. The new songs already share the stage with the ones that paved the way.
- The opener turns acoustic guitar, beatbox and percussion on the instrument into layers built with the loop pedal.
