Why watch

“To see Zwan at Pinkpop while promoting their only album, three months before the breakup was announced.”

Context

On June 9, 2003, Zwan arrives at Megaland with a debut record released just over four months earlier. Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin had already ended their first run with the Smashing Pumpkins. Now they share the Pinkpop stage with Matt Sweeney, David Pajo and Paz Lenchantin.

Lyric opens a run of eight songs that passes through Endless Summer, Settle Down and Honestly. Corgan, Sweeney and Pajo handle the three guitars; Lenchantin takes the bass, and Chamberlin the drums. Jesus, I / God's Gonna Set This World on Fire takes up the longest stretch before Of a Broken Heart and the closing Mary Star of the Sea.

A few months later, in September, Corgan announces the end of the group. The debut remains its only studio album, and plans for an acoustic offshoot never come about as intended. Preserved in the festival's audiovisual archive, the performance captures a lineup whose story ends the same year it reaches record.
