Simply Red

Simply Red brought American soul to Manchester and handed it back polished, wounded and ready for the radio at any hour of the night. Mick Hucknall’s voice, somewhere between plea and self-protection, guided a band that moved through soul, sophisticated pop, reggae and widely played ballads.

From the urban portraits of Picture Book to the smooth empire of Stars, the group made elegance a form of melancholy. After the comeback, it chose maturity over easy nostalgia.

Why listen to Simply Red?

Hucknall’s voice makes adult pain sound like a dangerous luxury, not hotel decor.
