Context
At 80, Gilberto Gil returns to Coala as the festival goes back to in-person shows. On September 16, 2022, at the Memorial da América Latina, he takes the slot of Alcione, sidelined after surgery. The performance comes after a run of shows across Europe with his family.
On stage, the family gathering takes on a smaller scale: Bem Gil and Flor Gil join Guilherme Lírio and Marcelo Costa. Expresso 2222 opens the set, which moves through Drão, Palco and Aquele Abraço. On Garota de Ipanema, grandfather and granddaughter share the vocals in Portuguese and English.
Stir It Up takes the repertoire to reggae before Vamos Fugir, Tempo Rei and Toda Menina Baiana close the performance. The festival streams the shows for free online. In April 2023, the Garota de Ipanema duet finds another destination: it is included on the compilation Ao Vivo no Coala Festival 2022.
- Flor Gil shares a bilingual version of Garota de Ipanema with her grandfather.
