Context
In June 1996, Bowie returns to the road with fewer people on stage. The summer extension of the Outside Tour does without Carlos Alomar, Peter Schwartz and George Simms. At Loreley, in Germany, the Rockpalast date takes place on June 22, at a festival that also features Iggy Pop, Pulp and Placebo.
Bowie opens with Look Back in Anger and goes through Scary Monsters and Diamond Dogs before entering 1. Outside territory. Reeves Gabrels takes guitar, Mike Garson is on keyboards, Gail Ann Dorsey plays bass and Zack Alford holds down the drums. Aladdin Sane takes in snippets of the Kinks; Baby Universal brings Tin Machine into the same run.
Telling Lies points to Earthling, the next album, while Moonage Daydream and All the Young Dudes close the show. German television broadcasts the full show through Rockpalast. The recording stays in the WDR archive and returns to the schedule in tribute to Bowie after his death, preserving the lean lineup of this stage of the tour.
- Aladdin Sane crosses Bowie's repertoire with snippets of two Kinks songs.
