Context
In May 1996, the Doobie Brothers take their 25th anniversary celebration inside Sony Music Studios in Manhattan. The reunion has a concrete purpose: benefiting the Wildlife Conservation Society. Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons welcome Michael McDonald, putting the three central voices of the group's history on the same stage.
McDonald takes the keyboards and sings Takin' It to the Streets, Minute by Minute and What a Fool Believes. Cornelius Bumpus also returns, while John McFee and Keith Knudsen have been back in the band since 1993. Among the hits, there is room for Slow Burn, then unreleased, and Wild Ride, from Simmons' solo work.
The gathering gets a double album and a home video release later in 1996, with VHS and LaserDisc before the later DVD and digital versions. The film also includes interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. The celebration leaves a recording that brings together distinct chapters of the band without reducing its history to a single voice.
- Michael McDonald returns to the keyboards on three songs from his time with the group.
