Why watch

“To see The Prodigy at the first three-day Pinkpop, just after Keith Flint took over vocals on Firestarter.”

Context

On May 27, 1996, Pinkpop reaches the last day of its first three-day edition. At Megaland, in Landgraaf, The Prodigy takes the south stage. Firestarter had come out in March, and Keith Flint is no longer just a dancer but also a singer.

Liam Howlett runs the electronics, while Maxim and Flint share the front of the stage. The lineup embodies the meeting of rave culture and punk attitude that widens the group's reach. The festival places this moment on the same bill as Rage Against the Machine, Sepultura and Alanis Morissette.

The Fat of the Land only arrives in June 1997. In Landgraaf, that future is still being built, while Music for the Jilted Generation remains the most recent album. The footage is part of Pinkpop's audiovisual archive and preserves the group in the gap between a change of language and its consolidation on record.
