Why watch

“To see the Hip at Pinkpop 1995, when Ahead by a Century still had different lyrics.”

Context

On June 5, 1995, The Tragically Hip arrives in Landgraaf a few months after playing Saturday Night Live. Day for Night had already debuted at the top of the Canadian chart. Now the five-piece takes this phase to Megaland, at Pinkpop, with six songs from the album carrying the performance.

Gord Downie sings between the guitars of Rob Baker and Paul Langlois, with Gord Sinclair on bass and Johnny Fay on drums. Grace, Too opens the show. The set list also allows for detours: Hiccups appears as an instrumental jam, At the Hundredth Meridian folds in Gift Shop and Nautical Disaster takes in lines from the Skydiggers.

In the home stretch, New Orleans Is Sinking makes room for Cookie Factory and a still-explicit version of Ahead by a Century. The song takes its studio form on Trouble at the Henhouse the following year. Preserved in the festival's audiovisual archive, the performance captures this interval between a song in progress and its destination on record.

New Orleans Is Sinking gives way to the Cookie Factory jam and the early version of Ahead by a Century.
