Context
In July 1996, Roland Orzabal returns to São Paulo without Curt Smith. The Tears for Fears name remains, but the partnership that launched the band had already broken up. At the Olympia, the visit presents Raoul and the Kings of Spain, an album that brings Orzabal's writing closer to his Spanish roots.
Los Reyes Católicos opens the set, followed by Sorry and Humdrum and Humble. Alan Griffiths shares guitars with Orzabal and Louise Goffin; David Sutton and Nick D'Virgilio form the rhythm section. Among the band's own songs come Sunday Bloody Sunday, Don't Give Up and Creep, before the close with Sowing the Seeds of Love.
After São Paulo, the route heads to Brasília and Buenos Aires, where the same lineup continues the South American trip. The Olympia recording preserves eighteen songs from this era without Smith. More than a run through the hits, what remains is the meeting between the familiar catalog and a recent album that takes up nearly half the program.
- U2, Peter Gabriel and Radiohead enter the set through three covers.
