Context
On May 26, 1996, the Butthole Surfers reach Megaland with Electriclarryland freshly released and a career built outside the center of American rock. Pinkpop finds the band in that passage: a group with underground roots takes on a big European festival without abandoning its own past.
Gibby Haynes shares the stage with Paul Leary, King Coffey and touring musicians Kyle Ellison and Owen McMahon. The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave opens the way for Birds, Cough Syrup and Thermador. Cherub and Hey bring the early recordings close to the new songs; Dust Devil closes the sequence.
In the following months, Pepper reaches number one on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, and Electriclarryland goes gold in the United States. The song is not in the Landgraaf show. Preserved in the festival's audiovisual archive, the recording holds the band at the moment before its commercial reach widened.
- Seven tracks from Electriclarryland share space with songs from the early albums, but Pepper is left out.
