Context
On April 15, 1996, the road has yet to begin. Mark Knopfler takes over BBC Television Centre in London to present the Golden Heart era, his first solo album of songs. The session works as a preview of the European tour and expands the lineup that will travel on.
Darling Pretty opens a sequence that places nine new tracks beside Walk of Life, Romeo and Juliet and Brothers in Arms. Sonny Landreth joins on Cannibals, Je Suis Désolé and Gravy Train. Keyboards, pedal steel, strings and traditional Irish instruments widen the stage around Knopfler's voice and guitar.
Nine days later, the tour starts in Galway and takes this core of musicians across Europe until August. The London recording comes out on VHS and LaserDisc in 1996, before the 2003 DVD edition. The recording fixes a concrete transition: the Dire Straits songs remain, but the name out front is now a different one.
- Sonny Landreth joins on Cannibals, Je Suis Désolé and the closing Gravy Train.
