Context
In June 2009, Bloc Party arrive at the Nürburgring with three records and a change of direction underway. Intimacy had moved the quartet closer to electronics without abandoning the guitars. Rock am Ring finds this original lineup months before the break that ends the band's first cycle.
On stage, Kele Okereke and Russell Lissack share the guitars, with Gordon Moakes on bass and Matt Tong on drums. The performance places Halo, Talons, Signs and Mercury beside material from the first two albums. Banquet, This Modern Love and Helicopter keep Silent Alarm inside a night tied to the Intimacy tour.
The online stream carries the show beyond the German circuit, in an hour-long slot on MTV's schedule. Later in 2009, One More Chance extends the move toward the dance floor, and the group goes on hiatus. The recording holds the four members before that interruption, not a definitive farewell.
