Context
On June 1, 2009, Franz Ferdinand returns to Pinkpop for the third time. The festival reaches its fortieth edition, and the quartet takes the main stage in Landgraaf, between Amy Macdonald and Anouk. Four months earlier, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand had pushed the band further toward dancefloor music.
Alex Kapranos, Nick McCarthy, Bob Hardy and Paul Thomson open with The Dark of the Matinée and soon present No You Girls. The crowd claps and sings along, without the stage relying on big effects. Take Me Out shares space with Ulysses; Lucid Dreams and Outsiders are saved for the final stretch, before the encore with This Fire.
After Landgraaf, the schedule moves on to Selector Festival in Poland. The season also includes opening slots for Green Day in August. Preserved in the Pinkpop audiovisual archive, the recording holds together two sides of that moment: the hits from the first albums and the new songs from Tonight, still fresh in the set.
- This Fire closes the show in the encore, after the run of Lucid Dreams and Outsiders.
