Context
On the shore of the Störmthaler See, Bloc Party arrive on the last day of Highfield with half the lineup renewed. It is August 2016. Justin Harris and Louise Bartle had joined the year before, after the departures of Gordon Moakes and Matt Tong. Hymns had already put that change into circulation.
Kele Okereke takes vocals and guitar, with Russell Lissack on the other guitar. Harris combines bass, keyboards, saxophone and backing vocals; Bartle is on drums and also sings. The set crosses Positive Tension and Banquet with Mercury and Octopus. Virtue and The Love Within bring the latest work into the mix.
Flux, Helicopter and Ratchet form the final run. The festival appearance is recorded by Rockpalast, the program of German broadcaster WDR, and stays documented in its performance archive. More than presenting a new record, this gathering of songs preserves the moment when a recent lineup starts carrying the band's past as well.
