Context
Twenty years separate Faith No More's first visit to Pinkpop from this return to Landgraaf on June 12, 2015. The difference is not only on the calendar. Sol Invictus has just broken an 18-year gap without studio records, and the band arrives at Megaland with new material to stand behind.
Motherfucker opens the show and Superhero closes the run: the new record holds both ends of the set. In between, Mike Patton, Roddy Bottum, Billy Gould, Jon Hudson and Mike Bordin move through different phases of the group. Midlife Crisis folds in Strawberry Letter 23, while Easy keeps the detour through the Commodores' catalog.
The next day, the route heads to the British Download festival, and the tour runs until October. The professional Pinkpop footage preserves fourteen songs and about an hour of that European leg. The recording pins down a specific situation: the reunion no longer lives on the past alone, as five recent tracks compete for space with the hits.
- Midlife Crisis makes room for Strawberry Letter 23, by the Brothers Johnson.
