Context
On September 13, 1994, Luther Vandross walks into the Royal Albert Hall with an album of covers about to reach stores. The night presents Songs and shapes a special for PBS. The London venue serves the project: bringing his vocal identity close to songs that span generations.
Vandross opens with Stop to Love and moves through Never Too Much before introducing his vocal partners. Lisa Fischer, Ava Cherry and Kevin Owens share the stage with him. Nat Adderley Jr. conducts the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, widening the scale of this meeting of band, voices and songs.
Songs reaches stores the following week and takes this project of interpretations beyond the London hall. The concert gets a VHS release later in 1994 and later returns on DVD and in digital format. The recording preserves the meeting between Vandross' own hits and the repertoire of other songwriters.
- Lisa Fischer fits the London taping in around the Rolling Stones tour.
