Context
Rock in Rio 2015 welcomes Rihanna four years after her first appearance at the festival. Unapologetic is still her most recent studio album, but FourFiveSeconds and Bitch Better Have My Money already point to later songs. The night of September 26 brings those phases together in a show that compresses much of the repertoire.
Rockstar 101 starts the sung sequence. Only Girl, S&M and Rude Boy appear alongside collaborations from her discography, such as Run This Town and All of the Lights. The acoustic block gathers Unfaithful, Love the Way You Lie and Take a Bow. Many songs get short versions, a choice that widens the reach of the catalog and shrinks the space for each song.
Diamonds comes before the encore with Pour It Up and Bitch Better Have My Money. The performance stands as a portrait of transition: an earlier album holds up the base and recent singles push the career forward. The format favors a succession of entrances and choruses, at the cost of cutting off some builds before they develop.
